The Real Costs of DWI

The Real Costs of DWI

Many people assume that the worst part about being convicted of a DWI is the risk of jail time or probation. However, many are unaware of the wide range of negative consequences for those who avoid the worst convictions. The truth is, being arrested for driving while intoxicated can cost thousands of dollars, even for first time offenses. At Knox Law Center, our legal defenders are proud to offer quality services for men and women who have been charged with crimes in Charlotte, North Carolina and surrounding cities. Here are just a few of the potential costs associated with a DWI.

Loss of Transportation
In North Carolina, being charged with a DWI results in an immediate temporary 30 day suspension of your ability to drive a vehicle. Reinstating those revoked privileges costs $100. If you are convicted, then you may lose your license entirely. In such a situation, you will need to carpool with friends and family, pay for public transportation or get an Uber every time you need to go somewhere.

Bail
While some individuals might be able to pay their bond in full to the court, many are forced to reach out to a bail bondsman to cover the unexpected costs. Those who pay their bond directly may receive that money back, but the fees charged by the bail bondsman are not refundable.

Court Costs
Minimum court costs for handling a DWI case are around $190. Payment of these costs are required upon conviction.

Fines
Depending upon the decision of the court, individuals can expect to pay fines ranging from $200 for a Level V case to $4,000 for a Level I conviction. This amount can skyrocket to $10,000 for men and women who receive an Aggravated Level I DWI sentence.

Insurance Premium Increase
Being convicted of a DWI at any level is normally followed by an immediate increase in insurance premiums. Expect as much as a 300 percent rise in your annual costs of car insurance.

Counseling, Classes or Community Service
Some judges will include a variety of obligations as part of your sentence. You might be asked to sign up for substance abuse classes, be required to find counseling or enroll in community service. Some of these programs or activities can cost anywhere from $100 to $250 per session.

Loss of Employment
Conviction of a crime, loss of transportation, time spent in jail and obligations of community services and program attendance can make it difficult to retain employment. Many people lose their jobs during the legal battle, even if they are eventually found innocent. If sentenced, it can be even more challenging to find a new job, resulting in a significant loss of income and long term financial instability.
