Hit By An Uninsured Driver? Let Us Help.

If you are hurt in an accident, the last thing you ever want to think about is that the person that hit you may not have insurance or may not have enough insurance. Most of us believe that we are hit and the other side will immediately come to our rescue to take care of our needs that they caused. What happens when you hear “I’m sorry, our customer’s insurance has lapsed” or “I’m sorry, our customer only carried minimum limits.”

Before you panic, call us! There are other sources of recovery that may be available. Beginning in January 2009, North Carolina drivers are mandated to carry uninsured motorist coverage (UM) in the same amount as the minimum amounts of liability required. If the person who hits you has no insurance, you can collect from your own policy under this uninsured coverage.

If the other person that hit you does not have enough coverage, you can turn to your underinsurance coverage for additional sums to pay your bills if your own underinsured limits are more than the minimum amount required. This is a benefit of having this coverage on your policy.

Medical Payment Benefits

You may have purchased coverage under your own policy for medical payments. This is like a mini health insurance policy within your car policy. Make sure you get all the benefits that you paid for when dealing with the insurance company. Motorcycle riders are exempt from medical payment benefits if injured on a motorcycle.

Understanding Insurance Benefits

The language in insurance policies is written by insurance companies! It is written to protect them and to discount what you are entitled to receive. North Carolina is a contributory negligence state and one of few left in the United States. If you can be proven to be only one percent at fault, you do not recover. Before you give a statement to the insurance company, talk with us to make sure you are protected.

For more than 60 years, the Knox Law Center has represented clients in auto accidents, motorcycle accidents, tractor-trailer accidents, hit-and-runs, pedestrian accidents and weather-related accidents. We work to make you as fully compensated for your claim as is possible under North Carolina law.
